Institutions American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) issued a statement that the children can be safe from the negative impact of even longer to play with gadgets or watching TV, as long as there remains the rule.
The statement was contrary to the previous AAP statement stating screen television and new media, including mobile phones, tablets and social networking is harmful to children.
The negative effects of these media do exist and are recognized by the AAP, but they also warned that the positive effects of playing with gadgets or watching television were also there.
Watching television for long is not good for children, but they also can not be banned from playing games on smart phones or tablets, Skype's with their grandparents, or communicating with friends.
Quoted KompasTekno of Nextren, Friday (10/09/2015), the AAP is still brewing guidelines for pediatricians and parents, about how it should rule the screen time (time spent staring at the screen) applied to children.
Some of these guidelines include the enactment of the rules the same for children in both the real and virtual world, such as providing long-playing limits.
In addition, the content consumed by children should also be considered. AAP said the quality of the content is more important than the platform that is used or the time spent with the media.
AAP also said relationships forged through online media are also a part of the maturing process.
"Social media can support the formation of a person's identity, but parents should be taught how to behave well in the real world and online," the AAP statement.
